Brief History of the Department:

The Department of Linguistics in the University of Lucknow has been functioning independently since 1976.  Prior to that it were a part of the Department of Hindi and Modern Indian Languages.  It grew largely due to the efforts of Prof. S.P. Agarwal and Mr. R.K. Rastogi.  Others who were heading the department, during the nineties and later, include Prof. G.S. Pandey, Dr. V.P. Jain, and Prof. Usha Sinha.  The department has been striving continuously to excel in both teaching and research activities.  The department has played host to some of the major conferences in Linguistics, such as the All  India Conference of Linguists in 1996 and 2010 respectively, and also the 24th Himalalayan Languages Symposium in 2018, besides organizing several national level seminars and workshops on different occasions.  The department has teachers with expertise and interests in the fields of Generative Grammar, Endangered Languages, Psycho and Neurolinguistics, Language Teaching, and also General Linguistics.  The department has always been committed to keeping itself abreast of the latest developments in the field by making its courses and syllabi more relevant, meaningful, and comprehensive.   Prof. K. Srikumar is currently heading the department.
