Brief History of Department:

Known as the ‘Gateway to Commerce Education’ in India, the Department is a pioneering institution which has earned a niche for itself in academic excellence ever since its inception in 1921 A.D. The Department of Commerce, Lucknow University has been rated among the top ten commerce departments in India. With a vision for tomorrow, the Department continues its endeavour in research, business and management education, consultancy along with UGC funded research projects. The Department aims at upliftment of overall academic standards of both teachers and students, to make the Department of Commerce a centre of excellence. The Department every year produces more than 150 post graduate commerce students. The Department launched Three Post graduate Management Programmes viz. Master of Management Sciences, Master of Corporate Management and Master of Finance & Control; one under graduate management programme viz. Bachelor of Management Sciences; one diploma course viz., Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Markets and Portfolio Management. These courses are now run under the banner of Institute of Management Sciences. Recognising its academic achievements, the Department was conferred the distinction of being selected for SAP-DRS (Phase-I) by the University Grants Commission and thereafter upgraded to Phase-II of the Project recently.
The department is alert about the need for 'Industry – Institution interface’ and constantly, is interactive with national Associations of trade & Industry.

For providing professional exposure to aspiring students, the department has been an accredited centre for ICAI and ICFAI, Hyderabad. It also invites regularly, professionals from the corporate world, to the benefit of the students. To keep pace with changing times, the department has upgraded / restructured its syllabus as per the new UGC model curriculum, in 2002. Placement activities hold centre stage in the department and the latest being the student of this department, being selected to the management cadre by the industrial giant TELCO in 2002.
The department has a proud lineage of alumni who are highly placed in the public and private sectors as well as Vice Chancellors of Universities.

With a vision for tomorrow, the Department continues its endeavor in UGC funded research projects and was honoured with the distinction of being awarded the SAR-DRS in 2004, which augurs well for the overall academic upliftment of both the teacher and taught that would definitely make this Department of Commerce, a centre of Excellence in the years to come.
