Known as the ‘Gateway to Commerce Education’ in India, the Department is a pioneering institution which has earned a niche for itself in academic excellence ever since its inception in 1921. With a vision for tomorrow, the Department continues its endeavour in research, business and management education, consultancy along with UGC funded research projects. The Department aims at upliftment of overall academic standards of both teachers and students and to impart light of learning to all its students.
The Department every year produces more than 160 post graduate commerce students. The Department launched Three Post graduate Management Programmes viz. Master of Management Sciences, Master of Corporate Management and Master of Finance & Control; one under graduate management programme viz. Bachelor of Management Sciences; one diploma course viz., Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Markets and Portfolio Management. These courses are now run under the banner of Institute of Management Sciences.
Recognising its academic achievements, the Department was conferred the distinction of being selected for SAP-DRS (Phase-I) by the University Grants Commission in 2004 and thereafter upgraded to Phase-II of the Project. The Department has recently been awarded “Centre if Excellence” by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. (2019-20)
The Department has been awarded BhauRao-Devras Shodh Peeth by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and recently signed an MOU with SEMA. In the year 2018 the Department successfully conducted a diploma course on Goods and Services Tax (GST) for about 130 participants from various walks of life. In the year 2019 the Department conducted a month-long free Net/JRF coaching for its post graduate students with a success rate of 30%. It plans to hold more such sessions for the benefit of its students.
The Department is alert about the need for 'Industry – Institution interface’ and is constantly interactive with national Associations of trade & Industry. For providing professional exposure to aspiring students, the Department has been an accredited centre for coaching by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. It also invites regularly, professionals from the corporate world for interface with the students. To keep pace with changing times, the Department has upgraded / restructured its post graduate syllabus as per the developments in the commercial world. The Undergraduate course curriculum has also been completely revamped as well as new subjects added in order to confer with the six-semester mode introduced in the year 2018.
Placement activities carried out by the University placement cell where the students of the Department actively participate, are selected in good numbers by leading corporates.
The Department has a proud lineage of alumni who are highly placed in the public and private sectors as well as Vice Chancellors of Universities including among others Dr Dinesh Sharma, currently Deputy Chief Minister of U.P, ex-Mayor of Lucknow, Professor, University of Lucknow, Dr Y.P. Singh, currently consultant, School of Finance and Commerce, Galgotia University, Noida, former Dean , Commerce and Business Studies, DU and Head, Delhi School of Economics, Shri Syed Sibtey Razi, ex-Governor of Assam and Jharkhand, earlier served as Deputy home minister of Government of India and Dr Furqan Qamar, former Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan and the First Vice Chancellor of Central University of Himachal Pradesh.
We are in the process of registering the Department’s Alumni cell called ULDOC for fostering a spirit of loyalty, strengthening the ties between alumni and promoting the general welfare of the Department.
