Brief History of Department:

The Department of Arabic is one of the oldest Departments of Lucknow University, as it also existed during Canning college era. It was established along with other departments when University was founded in 1921. It started working with the single discipline Arabic Literature, but in later period it started running two more subjects: Arab Culture & Modern Arabic. Presently the Deptt. Offers courses in Arabic and Arab Culture from UG level to Ph.D. and post doctoral programs including a PG course in Modern Arabic. According to the record of University committee minutes Shams-ul-Ulama Maulavi Kamaluddin Ahmad was serving as the Head of the department of Arabic & Persian in 1922.

Arab origin scholar professor Khalil Arab joined the department in 1922 and played an important role in its development.

Professor Waheed Mirza, a Ph.D. from Oxford University a well known scholar, joined the department as professor and later became the Head and Dean of Arts faculty.

Professor Mohammad Rizwan Alavi (Ex Head (1971-1992 & Dean) is known as the most prominent contributor of the department; as during his tenure the department was strengthened and consolidated to high level. He added various subjects and courses as Arab culture, Modern Arabic, Diploma in Arabic and proficiency in Arabic. He established Arab culture as a full-fledged discipline which was being run earlier as a small course with the name of” Islamic Culture” in the department of History, and now it is a part of almost all associated colleges. In fact he boosted up the teaching and research, and brought national and international recognition to the department.

The pass outs of the Deptt. of Arabic are playing important role in shaping the society. Many of them are permanent contributors to the field of academic research and investigation; they are also holding important posts in major universities and academic institutions. It is a matter of pride for the department that a number of its products are serving as interpreters, researchers and in other valuable capacity in the Arab world.

Near about 2-3 students clear JRF/NET every year.

There are 7 permanent faculty members in the Department at present. (Eight posts are vacant). The teachers, staff and students are committed for excellence in teaching and research in the required thrust areas.

• Use of computers for practice of usages and use of online libraries.
• Web portal.
• Use of smart class equipped with Laptop, Speaker, Projector, etc.
• Use of departmental and central libraries (It is in practice to go with the students to central library and to make them learn different techniques and use of encyclopedia and bibliographies).
• Tutorial classes for the students lagging behind.

• The department supports the students for their jobs.

• A placement cell is established under a faculty member.

• The Department has one classroom.
• One smart classroom.
• Departmental Library (Prof. Mohammad Rizwan Alavi Library) containing around 1600 titles.
• Some Journals are available on complimentary basis.
• Language lab is already sanctioned; space for the same is required.
