Renewable Energy was introduced in the University of Lucknow in 2007 as Self-Financed Two-Years Post-Graduate Programme with the support of The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. Of India. The MNRE  provided one-time financial grant of Rs. 50,00,000 in 2013 to develop the centre and to stregthen the laboratory and upgrade library and other infrastructural facilities for the Renewable Energy Programmes offered by the institute. The Ministry sanctioned 10 scholarships of Rs. 4000/- per student per month for the M.Sc. Renewable Energy Programme.The Ministry has also sanctioned  PDFs/SRFs/JRFs to the meritorious students of the institute under the National Renewable Energy Fellowship Scheme. In 2015, University Grants Commission provided a mandate to start Three years Bachelor of Vocational Studies (B.Voc.) Programme in Renewable Energy Technology.

Since the inception, The Centre of Excellence in Renewable Energy Education and Research has been growing as one of the pioneering professional and educational centres to promote education and research in the emerging field of Renewable Energy. In order to bridge the gap between academics and industry and to meet the current demand of skilled and trained professionals in Renewable energy worldwide, the Centre grew into an independent Institute under the Ordinance of The University of Lucknow in the Year 2021 known Institute of New & Renewable Energy.

Institute of New & Renewable Energy adds a feather to the University of Lucknow by offering tremendous potential in fulfilling the Prime Minister’s vision of developing an indigenous sustainable energy ecosystem in the country. The Institute has been in the forefront of meeting the requirement of industries of not only skilled manpower with good innovative skills but igniting the best brains for developing the latest professionals in this frontier field. The Vision of the Institute is to impart education and professional mentorship for those who want to make a career or working and upskilling to work in any verticals of Renewable energy, Energy storage, Energy efficiency, Energy conservation, Hydrogen energy and Electric vehicles. The Mission of the Institute is to assist with the National Renewable energy mission by providing world-class training and to help develop a skilled workforce capable of designing, installing, repairing and maintaining renewable energy systems and managing renewable energy projects.

The Institute offers bachelors to PhD programmes focussing on hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills. Practical training and project experience ensure that successful students from the institute get the best of jobs or become future energy entrepreneurs. It is presently located on the Second Floor of the Administrative Block, Second Campus University of Lucknow. The Institute is a Solar Energy Training Network (SETNET) partner of the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Gurugram, Haryana.
