18th October, 2001 will always be remembered as a memorable day in the history of the Lucknow University. It was that Golden Day, when Jyotirvigyan was introduced as a regular subject in the University. This subject got the status of a respectable subject and it was decided to teach the concepts of Jyotish, through the popular medium of Hindi, Sanskrit and English. Hence, due to effective support of the U.G.C., Lucknow University could initiate the policy of popularizing the Concepts of Jyotish in the Layman’s language, based on solid scientific & mathematical principles. Since then, the subject is being gracefully taught in the classes of B.A. & M.A.

During the first half year of 2001, the U.G.C. had permitted several Universities to introduce the studies of Jyotish, as a regular subject in their Universities. Lucknow University was First to introduce Jyotish as a regular subject of the University and within no time the University started its department of Astrology. This graceful & pious department was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Governor of Uttar-Pradesh, Shri-Vishnu Kant Shastri. On that occasion, the Mahamahim did not forget to point out that the so called opposes of this subject are also very fond of Astrology. Since then, a large number of Doctors, Engineers & Practitioners of Astrology have taken advantage of learning the details of Scientific Principles of this powerful subject of Jyotirvigyan, without facing any barrier of medium of instruction.

Consequently, this department began to shine with its full glory. Number of learned Specialist Faculty members came forward to help the department in achieving its Goal. Specialists from the field of Astro-Physics, Hindu-Mathematics, Indian Astronomy, Astrology & Sanskrit are closely associated with this department, with full zeal, devotion and dedication.

Now the department is running successfully, under the effective supervision of the Dean, Faculty of Arts & Ex-Officio Head of the Department-Prof. Prem Suman Sharma and Dr. Satyaketu, the Coordinator of this department.
