University of Lucknow, Department of Education : Inception

The idea of instituting a University at Lucknow was first proposed by Hon’ble Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, K.C.I.E. of Mahmudabad, who counseled through the column of ‘The Pioneer’ for foundation of a University at Lucknow.

The first step was taken when a General Committee of educationists and persons interested in university education appointed for the purpose, met in conference at Government House, Lucknow, on November, 10, 1919. A discussion followed, and it was resolved that Lucknow University should be a Unitary, Teaching, and Residential University of the kind recommended by the Calcutta University Mission, 1919, and should consist of Faculties of Arts, including Oriental Studies, Science, Medicine, Law, etc. 

On the 17th July, 1921 the University undertook teaching, both formal and in-formal, in the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Commerce and Law.

 

Department of Education

The Department of Education was originally established in the Faculty of Arts in the year 1953 with Prof. R.B. Mathur as its Head, and later acquired the status of an independent faculty in 1978 with Dr. S.N. Jha as its first Dean.

Since then the Department has not looked back and can boast of some outstanding achievements. Today, it feels distinguished and privileged for being the first ever Department of Education in Uttar Pradesh, that was conferred the status of an Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE) by the Central Ministry of Human Resources Development in 1994.

Adding a feather in to its cap the Institute was selected by the UGC to receive SAP- DRS for a period of 5 years from 2004. The Priority Areas identified by the UGC under this programme for the department are as below:

  1. Pedagogic Inputs of indigenous Thought,
  2. Human Rights Education,
  3. Primary Education.

 

Department’s Vision:

To develop the department as a center of excellence in research, education, training, and extension in a phased manner.

  • For enhancing the awareness regarding the mentalhealth and aiming to remove shame and stigma regular counseling are being done at the department level.

  • In order to mark the importance of different occasions, every year department organizes several activities and events.
  • Every year department plans field visit to the different parts of Lucknow and adjoining places provide the real time and first-hand experiences to the students.

  • Every year completely student managed tours of various parts of India, where the different committees of students gets chance to plan, organize and direct under the support of teachers.
